CASE STUDY
VISTA — San Diego 4 ecosystems
4 landscapes | each 2’x3’ hand cut glass, concrete, paint c Heather Hancock 2022
A commission for a West Coast executive conference room, delivering four distinct pieces that encapsulate the diverse landscapes within the client's service area. Each artwork, measuring 2 feet by 3 feet, was crafted using hand-cut glass integrated with concrete textures, resulting in a harmonious blend of matte and shimmering surfaces.
Design Process
The project commenced with the art consultant's request for concepts that abstracted specific landmark views, ensuring each piece could stand alone while collectively providing a cohesive visual narrative. Hancock presented two preliminary design directions:
Specific Views: Depicting wetlands, cityscapes, lakes, and deserts.
Abstracted Color Concepts: Focusing on the color palettes representative of the aforementioned landscapes.
Fabrication and Execution
Upon finalizing the designs, Hancock integrated glass and concrete with paint and texture to create a lively contrast between matte and shimmer. The fabrication of the four pieces was completed on a short timeline (2 weeks), ensuring timely delivery ahead of the scheduled installation date.
Outcome
The resulting artworks not only reflect the client's regional landscapes but also enhance the aesthetic of the executive conference room, offering a compelling and cohesive visual experience. This project exemplifies Hancock's ability to translate specific environmental elements into abstract art forms, enriching corporate spaces with meaningful and engaging visuals.
