Definition of Emblem

"An Emblem, in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, was anenigmatic picture with a motto and explanatory verse attached. In the sixteenth and seventeeth centuries, emblems often took the form of puzzling little drawings, the meaning of which was explained in appended verses....
